Romanian international rugby player Costica Mersoiu has been charged with murder, an official at his club Steaua Bucharest said today.

"Mersoiu was detained by police in his home village of Gugesti, 180 kilometres (120 miles) east of Bucharest, for killing a man who was his mother's live-in lover," Steaua's rugby manager Marin Mot said.

Mersoiu, 23, has been capped 10 times as a flanker for Romania and played in Ireland’s 37-3 victory over Romania in Bucharest last June.
